FSU graduate students and community members who have expertise in their field of study are also invited to teach. Our classes are taught by current or retired faculty from FSU, FAMU and TCC. Selected classes are also offered on Zoom or in hybrid form. OLLI classes meet on campus at the Claude Pepper Center and at several offsite locales (museums, nurseries, historic sites, etc.), as well as a number of senior living facilities. We offer a world of discovery for older adults who share interest in a variety of subjects, from composers to current events, religion to roman art, maps to myths – and more! Classes are held during three 6-week semesters, covering Fall, Spring and Summer. OLLI has been recognized by the Florida Legislature for its leadership in “engaging older Floridians and enriching lives.” We are associated with the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and receive funding through membership dues, class fees, private donations and funding from the Bernard Osher Foundation, which awarded its first million dollar endowment to us in the beginning of 2012 and a second in 2016 (see History of OLLI at FSU for more details)!Īdministered by university staff, OLLI at FSU is supported through a volunteer Advisory Committee and a multitude of member volunteers for various clubs, activities and committees. OLLI – short for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute – is a network of programs that partner with universities like Florida State. No college required!! OLLI students seek intellectual stimulation and enjoy examining new ideas and experiences in the company of like-minded peers pick up where you left off or explore that road not taken. At OLLI, we always strive to create a mentally stimulating program that provides a means for you to use your talents, experiences, and skills creatively and share intellectual and cultural pursuits while respecting diversity of thought in a relaxed, supportive, and academic environment. There are hot topic lectures each term given by knowledgeable professionals, there are workshops devoted to specific interests of the members, and unique programs during the year devoted to topics of immediate interest to the community. The topics are carefully balanced to explore new interests and discover and develop latent abilities. There's an extraordinary list of subjects available at OLLI: over 100 courses a year in the Denver area the courses cover things from today's headlines or are focused on gleaning great ideas from the great works of the past.
Those who lead the classes, the course facilitators, are recruited from the membership and share their expertise and interests while also serving as fellow learners. No academic or other credentials are required, only a passion for learning and a desire to participate in a small group environment. When you participate you get a great learning experience with a modest cost. They enjoy the camaraderie with others of diverse interests and have fun sharing their knowledge and insights with mature and intelligent students, drawn from all walks of life.
OLLI brings mature adults with a passion for continued learning and intellectual growth together in a relaxed non-competitive atmosphere to study and learn.
